Objectives and Outcomes
To ensure the longevity, sustainability and wellness of the careers of newly graduated veterinarians, by offering non-clinical skills coaching, facilitating emotional intelligence, and developing a mindset for lifelong resilience. Specifically formulated for new graduates that might not otherwise have access to a formal non-clinical development programme at smaller and/or regional practices.
Interpersonal skills
Develop the people-oriented skills of new graduates to manage interpersonal challenges and understand other perspectives within their new workplaces. Break down inter-generational conflict, facilitate constructive challenging of the status quo, and create more compassion for the perspectives of colleagues and managers.
Emotional intelligence and self-reflection
Improve emotional intelligence and self-reflection skills, reducing frustration and improving performance. Ensure accountability for their own role in challenges, and facilitate growth in their confidence and self-monitoring.
Personal and professional resilience
Focus on developing a lifelong anti-fragile mindset to ensure resilience for the challenges of being a new graduate as well as the ongoing pressures of our profession
Create optimism about the future of their career and the veterinary profession
Shift mindset and narrative of the industry from one of poor outcomes and attrition, and help articulate their ‘why’ to focus on making their own power to create for a long, fulfilling veterinary career
Peer to peer support and mentoring
A cohort of cheerleaders struggling with the same challenges, when they might not want to admit to university peers if they are feeling overwhelmed. Specifically designed for clinics that may only have 1-2 new or recent graduates, so may not be in a position to ask the 'stupid questions' of colleagues without feeling vulnerable.
Communication and behaviour change
Developing not only of basic communication and consulting skills such as rapport and body language, but also creating a deep understanding and interest in how people make decisions, and how we can help the likelihood of them being compliant with our recommendations and treatment plans.
Difficult decisions and ethical challenges
Exiting the structure of undergraduate life where there is always someone else accountable for the difficult decisions, and new graduates suddenly find themselves faced with the real world of being the person needing to make all sorts of complicated recommendations where the lines of 'right and wrong' or 'best practice and adequate practice' are no longer as clear as they expected.
